The Emotion of Regret Associated with the Word Karratan in the Holy Quran: A Study in the Light of Psycholinguistics Al-Shaimaa El-Sayed Ali Sholah Department of language Fundamentals, Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies for Girls – Port Said, Al-Azhar University, Egypt Email: elshimaasholh.173@azhar.edu.eg Abstract This study is a linguistic and psychological analysis of selected Quranic verses, aiming to shed light on the emotion of regret as it appears in association with the word karratan (كرة) in various contexts throughout the Holy Quran. Adopting a psycholinguistic approach, the research explores how phonological, morphological, and syntactic structures contribute to expressing this deep emotional state. It further highlights the miraculous nature of the Quran in depicting psychological dimensions through its unique linguistic features, and how it strategically employs specific words and expressions to create strong emotional impacts on readers and listeners alike. The study uses a descriptive analytical method, beginning with identifying the Quranic verses in which the word karratan appears, then narrowing the focus to those where it is connected to feelings of regret. These verses are examined across various linguistic levels to uncover their psychological implications, drawing on resources in phonology, lexicography, grammar, morphology, and exegesis. Key findings reveal that karratan is often linked to the unattainable wish to return to worldly life after it is too late—most notably expressed in the repeated phrase “If only I had another chance (karra), which reflects intense remorse. Phonetic elements contribute significantly to emphasizing this emotion, as in the word taqattaat (تقطعت), whose harsh, abrupt sounds mirror the sense of severance and loss. Likewise, morphological structures such as the pattern faalah (فعلة) in the word zajrah (زجرة) convey a sense of suddenness, intensifying the emotional weight of regret and sorrow.
