The Economic Empowerment of Women in Light of a Sound Understanding of the Objectives of Sharia (Women's Hard Work and Effort as a Model) Rawheya Mostafa El-Gennesh. Department of Public Jurisprudence, Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies (Female Students), Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt Email: ab7aath2005@yahoo.com Abstract: Islamic Sharia emphasizes the rights and status of women in society, including their right to work and contribute, just like men. Islam asserts that women have the right to work and earn a living as long as the work is lawful, suited to their nature, and in harmony with Islamic values and guidelines. It is well known in our society that women, especially working wives, often contribute significantly to family expenses. Their full salary may even be taken, sometimes by mutual consent, while the husband may neglect his financial duties toward his wife and children, leading her to bear the expenses for herself and her children. Meanwhile, the husband’s wealth may grow, which frequently happens. The issue arises in two scenarios: first, in the case of divorce or separation initiated by the wife (khulˀ), and second, in the event of the husband’s death. The question posed by this study is: if a divorced woman or a widow were to seek some form of compensation for her contributions to increasing the husband’s wealth during the marriage—apart from her inheritance in the case of death—would this be permissible, and does it conflict with the principles of Sharia in matters of inheritance?
