Abstract:
The study seeks to address philosophical questions regarding the nature of miracles: Are they violations of universal laws or merely of our mental perceptions? It also explores how to reconcile the disruption caused by miracles with the preservation of cosmic order, particularly in light of atheistic skepticism about prophetic miracles and their absence in the age of science. The study consists of an introduction, four sections, and a conclusion, covering the concept and possibility of miracles, major criticisms of their validity, a new theological interpretation, and the potential for causal explanation. It also examines the relationship between supernatural phenomena and the evolution of human civilization. The study aims to set up an inquiry to theological heritage to provide answers for challenges posed by empirical sciences. The study employs inductive, descriptive, analytical, critical, and retrieval methods. Key findings include: declaring a phenomenon as extraordinary means it exceeds our mental perception of the universe, without confirming it violates universal laws. Theological texts allow for understanding prophetic miracles as violations of mental perceptions, not of natural laws, aligning with scientific principles. While the recurrence of miracles is logically possible, it remains practically elusive. The evolution of divine manifestations through miracles aligns with humanity’s intellectual progress, reflecting God's wisdom. The study recommends further exploration of the boundaries between human perception and universal truths and utilizing Al-Azhar’s intellectual legacy to generate contemporary ideas on interpreting miracles. It also suggests designing educational curricula that integrate philosophy, science, and religion to enhance students’ critical understanding of miracles and supernatural phenomena.
