This study tackles, with a descriptive inductive approach, one of the means of performing meaning, which is the non-verbal reference. Such type is considered by Al-Jahez as the second type of signification of meanings after wording. The study focuses on the images of this references in the poetic purpose which has its own nature, which is the purpose of courtly love, represented by the Diwan (anthology) of Al-Abbbas Ibn Al-Ahnaf. The study uses the descriptive analytical approach as a tool to detect images of these non-verbal references, and the study is an attempt to enrich the Arab Critical Library with applied studies in the fields of linguistic communication and literary criticism. The study is divided into three chapters that investigate different images of non-verbal reference: The first chapter is entitled "Facial Expressions of the Eyes". The second is entitled "Signals and movements of the body", and the third is entitled "posture and positions". In addition to an introduction and a theoretical framework tackling a brief biography of Al-Abass Ibn Al-Ahnaf, then a definition of the concept of non-verbal reference. The study concludes with some results among them is that the face, by virtue of its position at the forefront of the human body, is characterized by its ability to perform various images and types of references which is employed in the channels of communication between lovers. The study also suggests number of relevant topics, including: the study of the lexicon of non-verbal reference in other diwans of Arab poets dedicated for different poetic purposes such as the purpose of lamentation, lampoonery, and praise... etc.)
