Wasil bin Ataa Sermon (died in131 A.H.): An Argumentative Pragmatic Approach

Abstract:
The present study aims at revealing the eloquence of communication and the aspects of argumentation in the sermon of Wasil bin Ataa. The sermon is a text whose objective is to influence the addressees and persuade them to believe that his creed is valid and to lead an ascetic life via an argumentative pragmatic approach. This sermon gains its significance through its entertaining and persuasive functions which are reflected in its discourse. This functional significance of the sermon is revealed through tracing its linguistic, rhetorical, and logical mechanisms. Among the most important conclusions arrived at by the study is that the sermon shows the competence of Wasil bin Ataa and his deliberate knowledge of preaching and of the methods of persuasion. The study shows that he focuses on both the entertaining and the persuasive aspects of preaching where he builds up the first aspect on stylistic and strategic devices to move the emotions of the audience via relying on the use of linguistic and rhetorical devices to influence the audience. The second persuasive aspect is shown to be based on the gradual use of arguments, the arrangement of logical inferences, and relating text to rational evidence via the gradability of argumentation and the authority of being a preacher and observer to influence and urge his audience to act according to its content. The sermon has proved successful as an effective public discourse without sloppiness in his call to turn to Almighty Allah; instead he concentrates on argumentative devices through which the content of the sermon is rooted in the minds of his audience.
